Smokey Sam

This is the real Smokey Sam rocket. It is fired at airplanes in training situations to simulate a Surface to Air Missile, "SAM".

Four unit launcher And close up of rocket. Nose and fin assembly is urethane foam, the tube is paper phenolic.

The trailer is the vehicle-mounted AN/VPQ-1 tracking radar, it provides the aircraft with an electronic simulation.  Notice how the motor i this picture produces white smoke, the SS propellants in HPR motors make black smoke. This is the same propellant, the difference is in how it burns at different pressures.
